Glossy cardstock

I just wanted to share a layout with you, that I made using glossy cardstock, and a clear resist pad.
I stamped my butterfly image onto the glossp paper using the clear resist pad(I stamped it all over the paper)
Then I took the Zing! embossing powder(American Crafts) and randomly sprinkled some over a few of the stamped images.
I didnt use my heat tool to heat emboss it, because I wanted to use the embossing powder more for the raw, glitter look.

Gaffer tape

I wanted to share with you 2, super quick ideas for using gaffer tape on your cards.
Card #1 "Hi"
I cut out the word "hi" from tape and positioned it as the flower centre.
I also used 2 strips as patterned paper, and adhered stars along the strips.
Card #2 "Sweet"
I adhered a strip of gaffer tape along the bottom of the card, layering a patterned paper strip along the top of it.

One of the things I really like about the mini Teresa Collins bind it all papers, is that if You want to make a mini layout that takes less then 5 minutes to create, then these are perfect for that!!
I layered one sheet on the printed sheet to use as a photo mat, trimming the excess from the edge.
i used one jumbo wallet picture, added fake "stitching" around the sides.
I limited the embellishments to one prima flower, some alphas, and one sentence for the journaling.

A challenge for mementos

This week, I challenge you to use non-scrapbooking mementos to accent your layouts. The two layouts above are from a family vacation to Florida. The top layout features the hole-in-one free game token that our son won, along with the score card from our game. The bottom layout features bording passes and the airline logo from the envelope that held our boarding passes.

The slice

I wanted to show you how versatile the slice design cards really are.
On the layout "Bloom where you are planted" I used the fa la la design card(which is a Christmas themed one) because I liked the tree designs on there, and wanted to prove to myself that those trees could be used for projects other then Christmas projects.
I cut out two, 2'' trees from patterned paper, sanded the edges, and messily outlines around them.
For the title I cut the letters 1 1/2'' and then outlined the letters using stickles.
I also took a thin white piece of paper from My son's paper stash and rolled it through my cuttlebug (using the swiss dots embossing folder)

Journalling Pages

Art is an extension of my thoughts and being. I'm trying to provide as many possible outlets for my creativity as possible. I've been playing with visual journalling as an extension to scrapbooking and part of the process for me is to create background pages. These ones were created with various toys including Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, Mini Misters with Reinkers and Perfect Pearls, Paint Dabbers, bubble wrap, rub-ons and more. The journal itself is a 4x6 Accordian Moleskine that I am slowly altering.

Cuttlebug cards

I had some fun this weekend experimenting with my new cuttlebug dies, and created a few cards to add to my stash! All cards are from a pack of Bazzill cards and envelopes from Rhubarb Roots.

The top left card (pink) was created using a butterly die, which is embossed with swirls. I added two Cherie Art rubons trailing the butterfly. The butterfly is adhered with foam adhesive to dive the card more dimension. I used a Fiskars punch along the bottom edge of the card.

The top right card (blue) was created using the dots embossing folder for the background of the card. I added two strips of Basic Grey paper before embossing. The butterfly is embossed with dots as well, and rubbed with chalk ink.

The bottom left card features an embossed pattern, which I accented using chalks.

The bottom right card has a distressed diamond pattern embossed, a piece of Basic Grey paper, and an embossed baby buggy stamp at the centre.

This week, I wanted to show you how you can use very minimal supplies to make a cute, little card.
I used a piece of patterned paper, a strip of Gaffer tap, and one shape-o-rama(Prima)
I folded the paper to make the card base, handcut 3 colourful flowers, and added a pop dot to each for added dimension, added the sheer photo corner above the gaffer tape, and using a hi-lighter, I coloured in the H and the I to spell Hi(without having to use any alphas)

Acrylic!

I have found myself using more and more acrylic. I love the versatility. I love that you can chose to keep it as is and not lose objects under that particular embellishment. I had an idea of basing a wall hanging from a large scallop frame from the Fancy Pants Transparent die cuts. I painted the frame pink on it's backside, white on the front and then proceeded to add a grungy feel by using different textures for adding other paint colours over the white paint. I used cardboard, bubble, wrap and a paint brush. I painted a piece of styrofoam black and covered it in mod podge to use as the base. I added a clear star also from the Fancy pants transparent die cuts pack which was perfect for hanging a Making Memories love notes metal charm (just attached the jump ring around one side of the star). Other supplies Basic Grey micro chip alphabet letters, Heidi Swapp Center of Attention alphabet letters, MM ribbons, Tim Holtz grungeboard.

Prima's shapes-o-rama are so cool to work with.
You trim them out, and you can doodle on them, paint on them, use alcohol inks on them, use stickles on them, etc.
I cut a piece of patterend paper 6x6, hand cut a design from Making Memories paper, adhered a shapes-o-rama with a picture and minimal journaling, and then added some stickles and little bit of doodling.

Mini Canvas

I've become completely obsessed with alternate arts and journalling this past week. The evolution and experimentation has been a really fast process and I can't wait to slow down and see where it all takes me.

I created this cute little 2x3 mini-"canvas" to play with a new technique using melted beeswax. After gessoing the canvas I added a couple of Basic Grey rub-ons and some American Crafts TradeMarks rub-0ns and I sprayed it with Tattered Angels glimmer mist. I then layered the piece with gesso and Tim Holtz Tattered Rose crackle paint. I accented I then brushed on beeswax - melting and scraping it off as I went. A final polish gave it some lustre.I hope you can play and take some risks this week. Let me know what you did!

Visual Triangles

Do you ever wonder where you should place the embellishments and other design elements on your layout? Imagining a triangle that connects elements is a great way to ensure that you have a balanced and visually appealing layout. In this layout, I've created a triangle of black embellishments, with the title, the photo tab and the damask flocked sticker forming a triangle. I created a triange of red elements with the journaling block, the quote sticker, and a little heart sticker layered over the photo tab (layout created using February Kit contents).

Chalk

There are so many ways to use chalk!! The possibilities are simply endless. I had fun one afternoon and here are some things i came up with.

I used chalk on this basic grey scalloped chipboard circle and heart which really gives a soft velvety finish.

I used versamark to stamp a butterfly image on this Jenni Bowlin chipboard butterfly. I then rubbed pink chalk on the stamped versamark. After that I restampled the same image in black ink overtop for detail. I defined the edges of the butterfly with black and pink chalk. I wanted to change the color of one of the white felt butterflies, so I chalked it to give a pink hue. I also rubbed chalked around the border of white scallopped paper to define the edge for a smoky feel.

I used my paper piercer to make a butterfly trail and chalked over top to make it stand out.

On this layout i didn't use patterened paper! I created my own background with chalk. The layout has a picture of my son drawing chalk on his face, so i wanted to use chalk somehow on the layout. I dipped a sponge dauber in versamark and made a polkadot pattern and then chalked over with a green chalk. I used the same technique for the swirl and the word "fun".

These are only a couple of the things you could do with chalk. I have only "chalked" the surface. haha. Some other ideas could be using chalk to change the color of a letter sticker to customize your layout or using chalk to customize the color your your flowers, the possibilities are endless! Try it and see how fun it is.

New Tag

I created this tag to play with lots of different stuff. I started by distressing the edges of the tag. I covered the 7 Gypsies tag with Black Paint Dabber. I then stamped on my image and embossed it with black embossing powder. I stroked Shell Pink Dabber over top of the whole tag with varying strokes and once it was dry I wiped it off revealing the embossed stamp again. That's the cool thing about the paint dabbers is that they don't stick to embossing powder! I sanded away some of the paint and then sprayed the whole tag with Tattered Angels Glimmer mist. I covered the Heidi Swapp chipboard crown in Lipstick Distress Powder and wrapped some wire around it. I finished it off with some Black Diamond Stickles. I attached and hammered a Making Memories eyelet for the corner and finished it off with Tim Holtz ball and chain. I had some cool feather trim that I liked to add more texture so I attached it to the back with double sided tape.

Door Hanging

I have had this piece of styrafoam in my scraproom for a long time. I had been wanting to use it for a while. So i made a sign for my daughters room. I painted the edges with Making Memories Chocolate Paint. Hot glued a piece of Pink Paislees paper onto the front. Embellished the sign with Provo Crafts flocked chipboard letters, magic mesh, Scenic Route Chipboard circle, Tim Holtz Grungeboard crown covered in pink flock and rain dots, Rose Moka mini letters, a misc button and Heidi Swapps pink chipboard heart. I used 2 small nails to attached the ribbon to the styrafoam and hot glued 2 Tim Holtz fasteners to hide the nail heads. Now off to make one for my son! :)

40th Birthday Album

I created this 8x8 Maya Road album as a birthday gift. It's a hybrid album, heavy on the digi layouts. Various elements used include Grungeboard, Tim Holtz lon fasteners, Basic Grey papers, Basic Grey Fibres, Distress Ink, Paint Dabbers, Distress Embossing Powder, Bo-bunny stamps, Tim Holtz Philosophy Tag and some other assorted goodies in my stash.

Being a fan of any products that allow me to get my hands a little dirty, I am a huge fan of stickles(although generally, stickles are totally mess free)
Stickles are really easy to work with.
You gently squeeze the bottle, and work it over the desired area.
you can use stickles on letters, chipboard, to add bling to a project, for doodling, etc.
On this card, I used Stickles to outline the windows on the house rubon, as well as the sun and cloud rubons.

I'm sharing this layout with you because it features a whole bunch of my new favourite things! I loved using this Jenni Bowlin bingo card as a photo matte. I inked the edges with green ink. I created the tag using ink and a mini-mister. I sponged the water based ink onto the tag, then misted so the ink would blend. Once the tag dried, I used a Basic Grey rub-on for the title. I added a Prima flower, Tim Holtz keyhole, and Creative Imaginations epoxy tree to complete the layout.

A favourite place

This week, I challenge you to create a layout or project that is all about a favourite place. The layout I'm sharing is a layout with photos of one of my favourite places, Niagra on the Lake. I visited there last spring with my Sister, and I took a lot of shots of the beautiful landscapes and architecture. While the time with her was part of the special memory, for this layout I wanted to focus on what I loved about the place.

To create this layout, I used supplies from the February kit. I liked the way that the black pattern in the paper picked up the black in the photos (on the lampost, the lighthouse, and the stone wall & church window. I added Karen Russell letter stickers and an American Crafts rub-on to complete my title.

white space

While looking through my layouts, I noticed that about 80% of them have a lot of white space on them.
I don't intentionally leave white space on the layouts, but I really do like the look.
If you struggle with the concept of having so much white space on your layout, this patterned paper by Teresa Collins is perfect, because it has the heart with wings design at the bottom of the page, so You really don't need to add a lot of other elements to the page.
I added one 4x6 picture, some gaffer tape(7 gypsies) transparencies(Prima) journaling spot(Luxe) and some patterned paper( I cut into tiny hearts) and word stickers from February's kit.

Labour of Love

This afternoon while my daughter was napping, my son and I made valentines for his preschool. We cut out hearts out of cardstock, used a pen to make faux stitching around the edge and addressed them to his friends. I can't believe he signed them all! We had to take a break mid way and sample the treats!!! We used a piece of tape to attach the heart to the sticker package. I finished them off by tying a ribbon to the stick of the sucker. I can't take credit for the cute idea as i saw it somewhere in a magazine. But i thought it was a fun and EASY way to make valentines!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly part 1

This could be the Ugly for sure. I think it's so important to scrap about all the parts of life. And this is where I'm at right now. This layout uses the Peony 6 digi paper available in-store. I masked off parts in Photoshop to have the swirl and flower go over the image to add to the overall feeling. Don't be afraid to let go of your ego and capture it all. I want to be able to look back and see the milestones,emotions and accomplishments. I don't want to only remember the good. It's how I know how far I've come. (It's cathartic too!)

A kit layout & alcohol inks

One of the things that I always love about kits is how easy they make it to pack for a crop, or to just get a layout done quickly. This layout uses the February kit:

I decided to give the transparency edges some definition, and to repeat the red edges on the swirl by applying alcohol ink to the edges. I used Ranger Alcohol Ink in Cranberry, with an alcohol ink applicator to rub ink along the edges of the transparency. I also used the alcohol ink to update a supply basic (American Crafts metal photo corners in Cream) by dabbing alcohol ink on the surface. I love the way that the edges are darker, and the coverage has a distressed look. I also love that I don't need to worry about the ink smearing or rubbing off on either of these smooth surfaces.

Let me wax poetic for a bit...

...as I made some interesting connections this week. Well, I found them interesting - maybe you will as well. I have spent a lot of time over the last while looking at creative blogs. Looking for inspiration, sharing inspiration, seeing what I think works or doesn't. And I realized a couple of cool things. The first was that there is an incredible community of Creatives that all link together in various ways. It's like the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. As I search, I wind up circling back to some familiar names or places. But never in quite the same way.

More interestingly, I have noticed a connection between Creatives and their tendancies. The more blogs I read and the more I chatted with people it came out that the majority of us seem to have issues with clutter, mess,organization,chaos and general pack-rattiness. As I thought back about my own life and process, I realized that every time I have tried to REALLY get my organization under control, I wind up blocking myself creatively. Anytime that I am really stuck in to heavy production mode and have to switch in to creativity, I fight it and really have a hard time getting in to that head space. For me, my juices flow when I'm not concentrating on what needs to get done. If I can have a couple of days with no expectations, then watch out! Because I can really get my teeth in to a challenge that I have been struggling with.

So while the mess and chaos in my house really bothers me, I am trying to see it as a sign that I am in a place of creative abundance and that I should give myself permission to embrace it in order to really see what is possible. A few dishes really don't matter in the long term. But my sanity may just get the break that it needs!

Crazy about chipboard!

Chipboard has always been one of my favourite page elements, so I couldn't resist picking up one of these Maya Road cupcake chipboard sets. It's just perfect for birthday cake layouts!

In this layout, I used Basic Grey patterned paper, Maya Road chipboard, a Tim Holtz Paint Dabber, Tim Holtz crackle paint, and Glimmer Mist. Because there is a lot of pattern on the paper, I kept the design simple. I added some journaling, a chipboard title, and the cupcake embellishment.

I used a variety of techniques to customize the chipboard elements on this page. I applied a thick layer of crackle paint to the title, covered the cupcake liner piece in coordinating paper and sanded the edges, and painted the cupcake white. I sprayed a light mist of glimmer mist onto the painted cupcake top, and a heavy spray onto the heart.

I love the Jenni Bowlin bingo cards.
You can use them on layouts, cards, wall hangings, etc.
I decided to use the "merry" card to make a 5x7 simple layout.
I rounded all 4 corners, applied stickles to the title, added soem Maya Road sheer ribbon, some punched shapes(and pop dots for dimension)
I cut my son's name from 7 gypsies gaffer tape, and used a prima transparency for the journaling.
This took about 5 minutes to make, so if you wanted to make a simple and fast mini album, these bingo cards would be perfect for that.

Valentines Album

Valentines Day is coming up so I wanted to share the album I created for my guy last year. The album is a Bo-Bunny word album - I love these for setting the mood and giving a really interesting canvas to work on. This is a hybrid album with half the papers being digi. I integrated events and moments that defined our first couple of years together along with the lyrics to a song that always makes me think of him, for so many reasons. Enjoy! The daily mini album for a month is the way to go!! I have documented a whole month all up to date while I have years of pictures waiting a spot in my scrapbooks. I feel as though I am mostly done scrapbooking Christmas and it was done 5 days after Christmas was over. I highly recommend this mini album idea. I was very motivated to print my pictures every couple of days and complete my pages immediately. It feels good to have a completed project!

I used the Scenic Route Garland Collection kit (which is awesome with an abundance of great chipboard, sticker and die cut accents) and a Tim Holtz grungeboard tab album. Love those things!!!

Some new Digi layouts...

...so I have had an incredibly busy fall/Christmas season and I have to apologize to all for going COMPLETELY incommunicado! However, I am now coming out the other side and I have had the opportunity to create some new pieces that were about catharsis, healing and having some fun.

This first one is a tribute to my cat who passed away last week at 17.

The background paper is from my Peony series with the colour taken out with a Hue/Saturation adjustment and tinted to a brown in the same setting. Also used: Adobe Photoshop, Rhona Farrer brushes, created brushes, Bleeding Cowboys font, Susie's Hand font.

This next one, Corteo, is a quick (45 minute) creation. I simply scanned in the ticket from Cirque, duplicated and flipped it and cleaned up some extraneous text. I put the picture in of the 3 of us, surrounded it with Grunge Borders by METH, stamped Smoke_Brushes_by_photoshop_stock behind (using Vivid Light for blending) and created some additional text. Font: Beyond Wonderland. All of these layouts use extensive layers to create the final pieces.

This last layout of Emory was for his 6 month shots. Fonts: the King and Queen, 2Peas Favourite Things, Paper - Emily Merritt Grunge Polkas; Little Dreamer Designs and created brushes.

I love tying in the colours that he's wearing throughout this piece. It's very vibrant. I am using a lot of blending styles with layer masks. The layer masks enable be to go back and change any part of the layout, including the edges and stamping at any time. It's much more non-destructive and flexible. I'm totally enthralled!

Last night, the Rhubarb Roots ladies taught a class on making a mini album using these transparencies(the album was designed by Shauna) so I thought I would show you my latest layout using the same transparency.
I used paint to colour in some of the floral designs, and to work with the colours I already had from the Prima patterned paper and pom pom ribbon.

**As soon as I saw the Rose Moka in the kit I knew I would LOVE working with this kit.
The colours are gorgeous, there was so much patterned paper included in the kit(2 of each pattern which is perfect!!) plenty of embellishments.
This would be a really great kit to use if you wanted to make a mini album for someone for Christmas, or even just to start a scrapbook for a friend or family member.

Digital Designs

This months newsletter provided sample digital designs and a basic tutorial by Shauna Hamm to get you started in digital scrapbooking. I still love to move stuff around with my hands, paint, and ink myself but this is something you can do through a hybrid layout. Hybrid combines digital with the traditional scrapbooking. You may chose to print out your paper (with or without your picture placed) add your journaling by hand or prior to printing and then adding dimension with physical product. Here is a creation from Design team member Jennifer Chipperfield.

The paper is Peony 1, Color Rubz Toby Font, Tim Holtz Distress Ink – Weathered Wood, bottle cap, Ranger Sepia accents, Rhonna Farrer – Snap Shot Frames Brush Kit

The feet were scanned in from actual foot prints and then printed on the paper at life size. The paper was taken down to 40% opacity as a layer and the colour shifted towards the brown tones. The image itself was de-saturated, toned and then selectively re-coloured. The edging is a selection of created brushes and some Rhonna Farrer digi brushes. Look for the second page to this coming soon – we decided to make it a two page set!

I am so excited to have joined the design team, but unfortunately it has come at the start of an insanely busy couple of weeks aat Chipperfield Photography. So I apologize for joining and leaving you all in the lurch without any posts. I've been working on some techniques and after a small creative hiatus, I'm brushing up on my skills and working some creative muscle again. This layout was just about playing and trying some things that I've wanted to.

Using grids to design

A lot of my layouts are clearly influenced by 6 years as a Yearbook advisor, when I learned an awful lot about principles of graphic design as they apply to designing pages. In this layout, you'll see that I used columns to create a grid of photos. While there isn't a dominant photo on this page to create a focal point, the grouping of the photos acts as a focal point in this design. The straight lines and columnar design prevent a multi-photo layout from being cluttered and unfocused.

This week, I challenge you to experiment with a grid design in your layouts.

Supplies: Love Elsie paper, Bazzill cardstock, Scenic Route lined paper, Basic Grey & American Crafts rub-ons, circle punch, KI red ink, Zig pen.

This week, I challenge you to repeat a shape on your layout. On this layout, I used a transparent die cut by Fancy Pants in a parenthesis shape, and I repeated the shape with the Making Memories journaling paper that I selected.

Black & white

It seems like I've been really going back to basics a lot lately. On this layout, I wanted to keep the colour scheme really basic, so I stuck with black, white, and one other colour for a bit of interest. I challenge you, this week, to create a layout using black & white as your main colour scheme, with only one other colour as an accent.

An old standby

I go through phases when I get really into challenging myself to do new things in my layouts, and that's great. It pushes me to develop my creativity. Sometimes, though, there's nothing wrong with sticking with what you know works for you and your style. There are a few layout designs that are favourites for me... they are just my style, I'm always happy with the end result, and they appeal to me. I love that!

What are your standby designs? Embrace them! Use them to create a few layouts this week... you'll feel productive, you'll love the results, and you'll get more confident with your scrapbooking style with every layout!

After eyeing Prima's fancy felt matties for awhile, I finally gave in, and I am glad I did.
The pack comes in 3 colours, black, grey and pink so you have a variety to work with.
For my layout, I didnt want to use a whole piece to use as a matt for my picture, so I trimmed the felt so it framed part of the picture, and I still have half of the matt left for another use.
You could also trim the design to use on a project, cut into a strip, use as a card front, and so much more.

You could substitute a 5x7 picture if you prefer scrapping that size.
The "frame" around the picture could be buttons, letters, extra journaling, ribbon or other embellishments or doodling.

Something old, something new

This layout features the tag that I created using chalk & stamps for the August newsletter. This was one of those occassions where I started a layout with an embellishment. I loved the way my tag turned out, so I built the page around it... mixing new and old elements.

I selected this sheet of Dream Street paper because I thought the touches of dark blue, and the greenish design worked well with the colors on my tag. To unify the color theme, I added a few red Prima flowers and used a blue SEI rhinestone brad in the center of one. The photo that I used is also about a year old ;-)

Of course, I couldn't create a layout without digging into some of the great new products that have been coming out... so I added a Fancy Pants transparent title & hearts. I tried a new technique with these. I wanted to give them some color, and I had the perfect red and green Tim Holtz alcohol inks to go with the paper, but I wanted a different effect than I usually get using the applicator. So, I decided to try dropping the ink directly onto the plastic. For the words, I tilted them around until I got a fairly solid coverage of ink. For the hearts, I dropped dots of red and green onto the hearts (it's harder than it sounds to get nice dots). I also added a new Tim Holtz journalling tag to the layout.

Here is a layout I created using supplies from this fabulous kit.
I doodled around my photo matt to make it look like stitching, and i rolled and tore the ends of the matt.
I stamped words onto the flower and one of the buttons.

I love scrapping because it is my creative outlet. Plus I want my son to visually remember his growing up years. I have few pictures of us growing up and I miss that. That will not happen for my son, no matter how much he hates the camera.

Thanks for the tips Shauna...here is one i did. The mod podge worked amazingly well! I first stamped my image and then used a paint brush to paint the mod podge on!

I have to admit that when Stickles first came out, I wasn't jumping up and down with joy. I though to myself, "hmmm, glitter glue...whoopee!" :-) After I saw a few people actually using it, I was an instant convert! I love how easily they apply, love the colours, and I love the subtle bit of sparkle that it adds to my layouts. It's glitzy, without being overboard!

I used Pink Stickles in this layout. I traced around the border of the die cut, accented the swirls on the heart, and accented the negative space on the crown chipboard. (Supplies: Teresa Collins paper & die cut, Making Memories Paper, Maya Road chipboard, Tim Holtz stickles & crackle paint, Prima flower & crown "tape," Zip pen, Bazzill cardstock, Making Memories glitter letter stickers).

I loved all these bright colours and the fun designs on the Rose Moka paper. What a great opportunity to highlight a Canadian company! I think my favourite sheets were the brick and woodgrain but I'm still waiting for some pictures to go with those (they are apparently on the way here). But within my stacks of pictures on my table I found many pictures that worked well with the kit! I love the challenge of staying within the limits of prechosen embellishments. Hope you enjoy working with it as much as I have!

August Kit - Charlene's Fun!

When I first saw the kit I was a little worried. I thought to myself, there is an awful lot of pink in there! But as I started working with it, I found that the pink, along with all the other fun, summery colours were perfect for creating. This kit got me to step out of my comfort zone, but was a lot of fun to work with! I highly recommend this kit!

I was also able to create a cool little mini album from this kit. I used a Bind it All Machine (available for preorder from the store) and traced the biggest Teresa Collins journalling square, for my "photo" pages. This is a cute little mini album that could be created for almost anything!

I don't know about you, but I have soooo many extra blank or ruined cd's laying around my house.
I was thinking of what to do with them rather then just toss them, so I covered the top with cardstock(you could also use patterned paper) and adhered using mod podge, trimming the excess paper off with a craft knife.
I added some dry wall tape, which I coloured purple using Making Memories paint, and letter stickers(Sassafras??)
I didnt want to add very heavy embellishments because then the magnets may not support the weight, so I added 2 Making Memories flowers, and a button to each centre.
For the final touch, I doodled around the edges, and added magnets to the back.
I would love to see what you come up with for your used cds.
